Rose Quartz crystal bathtub

Have you ever wondered what the ultimate luxury bathtub is for your bathroom? This exclusive Rose Quartz bathtub is without doubt exactly that. This bathtub is made by world renowned art sculptor Jan-Carel Koster, and is handsculpted from one single piece of crystal gemstone.

This unique Rose Quartz bathtub was crafted from one giant gemstone crystal weighing 9500 kg, sourced from the deep inlands of South Africa.  To illustrate this immense size, the creation of this masterpiece necessitated the construction of a road for transportation to Cape Town, where Jan-Carel established a temporary outdoor studio to sculpt this exquisite piece.

Why is a Quartz bath so exclusive?

A Quartz bathtub is so special because Quartz in large sizes is very hard to obtain. This is because almost all African sources of Quartz, Jasper, Amethyst and many other beautiful crystals occur in the Namaqua belt, including this Quartz stone. This area is a vast changing landscape, from rugged semi-desert to mountains, through which the Orange River cuts to the sea, all south of the Kalahari Desert.

Because of this remote place, and the fact that Quartz is a popular gemstone that is becoming increasingly difficult to find in large sizes, it is very special to find one with the adequate dimensions for a bathtub.

Although a new source of Quartz was recently discovered in the Orange River basin, this area is located approximately 30 km from the nearest settlement and can only be reached via almost impassable paths and roads through mountainous area.

With this in mind it is easy to understand why a Quartz crystal, the size of a bathtub, is exremely rare and hard to obtain.

Golden signature

Certainly Jan-Carel’s signature is an essential finishing touch to any project. While he typically stamps it with copper, he sought an even more exclusive signature for this extraordinary bath. That’s why instead of with copper, this artwork is adorned with a stamp of 24 carat gold, perfectly complementing the luxurious essence of this masterpiece.

Custom made

Jan-Carel and his team resourced the exclusive materials for this crystal bathtub on request. Its bespoke design was furthermore made to fit the specific end-destination. In addition to that, Jan-Carel sculpted the inside of this bathtub  to fit the clients biometric measurements perfectly so that it ensures absolute comfort. He finally worked with the architect to make sure that style, measurements and design matched perfectly for it’s final destination.

Rose Quartz bathtub on location

After creation, this crystal bathtub was transported to its final destination. Transport of such a large item is very difficut and requires a lot of expertise. To illustrate, the bathtub had to be shipped and even flown in via a helicopter to reach its final destinaton. Jan-Carel and his team have many years of expertise in transporting large and heavy items and are always ready to help you. Contact  for more information

Making of the Rose Quartz Bathtub

Rose Quartz Bathtub

As the Architect on the project, I was tasked by the Client’s team to investigate a “unique” piece of sculptural bath, particularly one that cannot be recreated. Without Jan-Carel and Guido on board, this would have been nearly impossible to achieve. JC immediately understood and proposed the concept. However, the trickiest part was the internal aspect of the bath, which had to exactly match the Client’s biometrics. JC delivered beyond expectation, and his unmatched skills turned a boulder into a beautiful “haute couture” piece of Art. Consequently, when the Client saw the piece, he was in complete awe and marveled by this creation. JC has my highest recommendation, and I cannot wait to work with him again! Truly, words are not enough to describe this artwork that slowly emerged through his skillful hands touching the rock!
